| that we can offer you – and that’s something of which we are mighty proud. Because finally, people who don’t eat fish, such as vegetarians (as this is where we usually get our omega-3 fatty acids from) can also consume this essential substance. The opportunity to do so comes thanks to a plant called “perilla frutescens”.
The perilla plant belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is native to East and Southeast Asia, where it enjoys a large following. In Asia, it has long been not just a popular cultivated and spice plant, but also an extremely popular nutritional supplement. The perilla plant owes the designation “omega-perilla” to its composition. Because perilla seeds yield an oil which contains an enormous amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids – in particular the essential acid alpha-linolenic acid, the vegetable omega-3. In no other plant is omega-3 present in such high doses (twice as much as in fish!). And that’s good news, because omega-3 is very important to us humans. Because we cannot manufacture this essential fatty acid ourselves, we rely on obtaining it from our diet.
The best-known source of omega-3 is fish (e.g. salmon, herring, mackerel, tuna). These saltwater fish contain two omega-3 fatty acids – Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Two omega-3 fatty acids? Yep! Omega-3 fatty acids are actually a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids. And the most important of these are EPA, DHA and – since abbreviations are so nice, we’ll use another – ALA. ALA is alpha-linolenic acid, which is found – in such abundance – in the perilla plant.
And now the best bit - the human body can itself manufacture the fish fatty acids EPA and DHA from vegetable alpha-linolenic acid. All you have to do is just consume ALA. With our first purely vegetable omega-3 oil softgel, that’s no problem. Plus, they represent a great alternative to fish oil capsules, if, for example, fishy flatulence is not your thing, or you are worried about pollution from the seas. And now, why are omega-3 fatty acids so important? Well, they are essential for us humans, because, among other things, they form the raw materials for the prostaglandins. These are substances produced by the body with a variety of functions. Omega-3 fatty acids also play an important role in the complete fat metabolism system.
We also recommend omega-3 for your circulatory system.
